A Letter to the Version of Me Who Was Grieving

I wish I could sit beside you for a minute. Not to tell you that everything is going to be okay, because I know how empty those words can feel when your entire world has changed.

I would just sit with you.

I would let you cry without trying to fix it.

I would tell you that you don’t have to understand any of this yet.

You don’t have to know how you’re going to live the rest of your life without someone who was supposed to be part of it.

You only have to get through today.

There are going to be moments when you feel like everyone else has continued living while you are standing still. You’ll see people laughing, making plans, complaining about ordinary things, and you’ll wonder how the world can possibly keep moving.

Eventually, you will start moving with it again.

Not because you stopped loving him.

Not because you forgot.

But because somehow the human heart learns how to carry love and loss at the same time.

There will be birthdays. Babies. Family pictures. Holidays. Accomplishments you desperately wish you could tell him about. And there will always be an empty space where you imagine he should be standing.

But there will also be so much love.

You are going to build a life that carries pieces of him forward. You are going to tell stories about him. You are going to say his name. You are going to create something meaningful from the love you still have for him.

And one day, you’ll realize that surviving grief didn’t mean leaving him behind. It meant learning how to bring him with you differently.

So cry when you need to. Laugh when you can. Don’t feel guilty for either.

And when you feel like grief has changed you forever, know that it has. But change does not mean your story ended.

There are still beautiful chapters waiting for you. You just can’t see them yet.

Love,
The version of you who kept going.
