There are days in motherhood when nothing extraordinary happens.
No big milestone.
No birthday.
No first day of school.
No carefully planned family adventure.
Just breakfast dishes in the sink, little shoes scattered near the door, someone asking for another snack, toys covering the floor, and a house that somehow becomes messy again five minutes after you clean it.
Those days can feel completely ordinary.
But lately, I’ve been thinking about how quickly ordinary becomes something we miss.
The little voice calling “Mom.”
The child who still wants to climb into your lap. The tiny hand automatically reaching for yours in a parking lot.
The bedtime stories.
The stuffed animals tucked underneath little arms.
The fingerprints on the windows.
The shoes that somehow get smaller every few months.
One day, without realizing it, you pick your child up for the last time.
One night is the last night they ask you to lie beside them until they fall asleep.
One morning they walk into school without turning around to make sure you’re still standing there.
Motherhood is full of invisible endings. And beautiful beginnings.
Maybe that’s why it can feel like your heart is constantly being pulled in two directions.
You are so proud of who they are becoming while simultaneously wishing you could freeze who they are right now. All we can really do is notice it.
Take the picture even when the house isn’t perfect.
Write down the funny thing they said.
Let them climb into your bed sometimes.
Stay for one more bedtime story.
Listen when they tell you something that feels insignificant, because to them it might be everything.
Our lives aren’t mostly made of extraordinary days.
They are made of thousands of ordinary ones.
And someday, those ordinary moments may be the ones we miss the most.
