What My Dad Taught Me Without Knowing It

Prairie at dusk, an old wooden fence post in the foreground, long shadows stretching across golden fields, warm and nostalgic, cinematic landscape

There are things our parents intentionally teach us. How to do certain things. How to treat people. How to work hard. How to show up for family.

And then there are lessons they teach simply by being themselves. Those are often the lessons we understand much later.

Since losing my dad, I’ve thought a lot about the things he left behind. Not possessions. Not the things you can pack into boxes. The pieces of someone that become woven into the people who loved them.

My dad taught me many things without ever realizing he was teaching me. But perhaps the biggest lesson has been this:

A meaningful life doesn’t end when someone dies. It keeps moving through the people they loved. And I hope I spend the rest of mine making sure a little piece of his does too.
