What Writing My First Book Taught Me

Writing a book taught me lessons I did not expect.

First, I learned that you do not have to feel ready to begin. There were moments when the story felt clear and others when I questioned every sentence. Progress often came from sitting down and writing anyway, even when I knew I would need to revise later.

I also learned that vulnerability can be part of meaningful work. Sharing memories and grief publicly is different from keeping them in a private journal. I had to decide what I wanted readers to understand and which parts of my story I felt ready to share.

Most importantly, the process reminded me why stories matter. A book can be a way to honour someone, connect with a stranger or put language to feelings another person has struggled to describe.

Built With Purpose is my first published book, and I am still learning as an author. If there is a story or project you have been holding close, I hope you give yourself permission to begin imperfectly. The first step does not have to be beautiful. It only has to be real.

A serene Canadian prairie landscape at golden hour, soft warm light over tall wild grasses and wildflowers, gentle rolling fields fading into a hazy horizon, muted sage green and dusty rose tones, cream sky, dreamy atmospheric soft focus, peaceful and intentional, editorial photography, plenty of open space
